Choreographer Joumana Mourad uses virtual reality to explore the science behind the way we move and asks whether this technology could help us unlock our bodies’ potential?

Joumana Mourad is a dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director of IJAD Dance. In her artist commission she brought together technology, the arts and science, to unlock our bodies' potential. Body and movement were put at the heart of the questions: 'What is the future of the human body? What is the future of mobility and our movements? Is the body being desensitised in our modern world? How can we make the human body future proof?'
Joumana says, 'I believe in the inherent potential of combining movement, choreography, science and technology. Together they allow us to further understand the human body and to advance movement techniques, while offering more creativity and innovation on a multitude of levels.’
Using them theme of urgency as her starting point, she created an immersive, virtual reality exploration lab, inviting participants to transform the perception of their body, through music, movement and using VR headsets with professional dancers. Uncovering the science behind movement, these playful performance experiences took place at the University of Exeter and Minack Theatre, Cornwall in November 2019.
The piece is now available for touring in the UK. Contact hello@ijaddancecompany.com for more information.

I see this commission as an invitation to inspire audiences to play and create with us to make the next virtual reality performance.
