Arts and Culture Creative Fellowships

Run annually, our Creative Fellowships are short term explorative placements that bring creative practitioners into research settings and encourage new conversations across disciplines.

Arts and Culture Creative Fellowships offer creative practitioners the opportunity to engage with innovative academics and professional services staff across the University of Exeter’s colleges and campuses. They are open to practitioners of any artform, including visual, digital, sound and performing arts, craft, design, film, literature, music and beyond.

Rather than being a residency, these opportunities are described as placements. The creative practitioner is a peer, opening up new approaches and conversations with the University hosts while developing and enriching their own creative practice. The placements usually last for around 5 weeks in total across the academic year.

This scheme encourages mutually beneficial exchange, where both the host and the creative practitioner gain new insights and potential ways of working.

Aims of the Arts and Culture Creative Fellowships

Connect individuals and disciplinary perspectives within the University through creative engagement and outputs.
Advocate for artistic processes and creative methodologies within the context of a research-intensive university.
Work with interdisciplinary groups that span a broad range of methodologies and perspectives.
Document processes and ways of working using creative practice.
Develop a tangible outcome that communicates the process of the Creative Fellowship.

Timeline and application process

We run this programme annually across an academic year (September to June) and the number of Creative Fellowships that we support varies year on year depending on funding.
The callouts for University hosts are usually shared internally at the start of the academic year, towards the end September.
Teaching, research and professional services staff from across all four University of Exeter campuses are welcome to apply. We asked that you complete an application form sharing more about your project or area of research and why you would like to work with a creative fellow.
If your application is shortlisted, you will then be invited for an interview with a panel including members of the Arts and Culture team.
Once University hosts have been selected, we will then share a Creative Fellow callout which includes information about the host's project.
Creative practitioners from all disciplines and locations (including those based internationally) are welcome to apply. Please bear in mind that you may be required to travel to one of the University's campuses in Devon or Cornwall to undertake parts of your fellowship.

Artist, writer and educator Dr Linda Stupart is collaborating with the University's Gender and Sexuality Collective to reimagine the possibilities for sexuality and gender research and teaching across the University of Exeter.

A multidisciplinary project with artist Carmen Wong, bringing together geography, cartography, anthropology of food, and gender studies to explore new research on Kurdish migration, belonging, and food citizenship in Devon.

Dr Laura Sangha and Chris Hoban collaborate to use music and lyrics to weave together history and storytelling, bringing to life the people and stories hidden within English wills from 1540 to 1790

Poet and artist Ella Frears collaborated with Dr Timothy Cooper on 'Maritime Environmental History: Oral Histories and Creative Conversations', a Creative Fellowship exploring new ways of connecting environmental history as a field of knowledge with public and community experiences of environmental change.

Multi-disciplinary artist Daksha Patel collaborated with Professor Clare Saunders from the University of Exeter's Department for Humanities and Social Sciences, Cornwall on 'Exploring Environmental Justice', a social movement which aspires to put justice for people, organisms and eco-systems at the heart of solutions to environmental problems.

A Violence Filled With Flowers

Multidisciplinary artist Tom Stockley collaborated with Dr Natalie Ohana and students from the University of Exeter's Law School on a Creative Fellowship exploring 'Law, Testimony and Trauma', a third year module which focuses on traumatic events related to social oppression, such as racism, sexism, classism and xenophobia.

Specialist artistic fabricator, joiner, carpenter, designer, artist and educator River Jean Nash, joined Professor Sarah Dyer from the University's Education Incubator to explore themes fundamental to enabling meaningful change in education practice.

Stand-up comedian Siân Docksey collaborated with Dr Ina Linge from the Department of Languages and Culture and researchers from the Sexual Knowledge Unit on our Streatham campus to explore 'The Politics of Sexual Nature'.
