Artist Commission - Fiona Benson and Mair Bosworthcommission
In The Company of Insects
Award-winning poet Fiona Benson and radio producer and sound artist Mair Bosworth collaborated on a series of sound art-works about insects, each with a poem at their heart.
Drawing on the expertise of entomologists based at the University of Exeter and further afield, the interest and wonderment of nature-lovers and children, and the insights of people intimately involved in the lives of insects such as river keepers and fishers, the pair gathered interviews and audio recordings and weaved together beautiful sound pieces that celebrate these endlessly fascinating creatures.
Taking them from the Smoky Mountains of West Virginia to the wild meadows of Totnes, the commission culminated in an immersive sound event at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum in November 2019. Featuring soundscapes, interviews and poetry readings m this sold out event told the story of insects all over the world.
Fiona Benson will be continuing her commission with us into 2020, working on a series of workshops and other participatory events as well as a very special curated audio series of her poems.
Fiona Benson is an award-winning Devon-based poet. Her poetry collection, Bright Travellers, shortlisted for the prestigious T.S. Eliot Prize in 2015. Her latest poetry collection, Vertigo and Ghost, has been recently published.
