Arts Commission 2020 - Fiona Bensoncommission
Award-winning poet, Fiona
Benson, has been selected for the Arts and Culture 2019-20 ‘Urgency’ Arts
Commission. She is continuing her exploration of insects, which started in
partnership with radio producer, Mair Bosworth, for their 2018-19 ‘Urgency’
Fiona is interested in the urgency inherent in an insect’s short lifespan, as well as the urgency of the environmental crisis and shrinking biodiversity. Her insect poems are love stories – capturing her fascination with these tiny creatures, painting wonderful images of insect life that we can’t help but relate to, and sparking a new appreciation for these small lifeforms that are all around us.
Over the course of the academic year, Fiona is running poetry workshops with a range of audiences, which will result in an ‘audio-pamphlet’ of new works that will be shared via the Arts and Culture website. In the spring, Fiona will be sharing readings from the Urgency Arts Commissions (2018-20) – just one way that we’ll be celebrating Exeter’s new status as a UNESCO City of Literature.
