This work comes from a residency at Exeter's Franklyn Hospital working with adults with mental illness and dementia. I would link it to Translational medicine or Societal and lifestyle shifts. The motif in the work is an exploration of the experience of dementia - an image of the brain, a section through a tree or ripples in water. I hope that it evokes a sense of possibility.
While making art with patients suffering from dementia it is clear that the initial confusion of a first meeting is quickly followed by the calm of connection and communication; patients are soon able to talk with each other, share thoughts and feelings and make artistic decisions in an art workshop. I have seen first-hand how this kind of intervention can greatly improve mood and behaviour.
