University of Exeter Arts and Culture Commissionscommission
The University of Exeter has launched the first of a series of Arts Commissions on and around its campuses in Devon and Cornwall. Following the launch of our new Arts and Culture strategy, we have been working with artists from the region and beyond to enrich our cultural environment and unlock resources and potential.
The commissions explored new ways of working
with creative communities around our campuses and further afield, using different artforms and addressing different aspects of what it
is that makes Exeter and the South West region distinctive. The
resultant commissions include soundworks for radio, augmented reality and film
works and a publication of new writing. The works will continue to be presented
at various sites and with different partners, and you can also find out more
about them here.
The publication Ope: and Anthology published by Sea Post Press takes us down Cornish alleys (known as ‘opes’), that we could otherwise walk past unknowingly, while Anna Best’s film The Tangle explores connections between the new town of Cranbrook and the main University campus in playful storytelling. Duncan Speakman’s Only Expansion is an augmented reality soundwalk. Accompanied by a guide, you are transported to distant places and futures to think afresh about changing climate. And for the Sound Context commission Resonance FM's Ed Baxter has worked with Michael Umney to present uncertainties and surprises inherent in trying to transmit knowledge; by whispering, by speed reading and by holding on to fading images in the dark.
You can listen to and watch the works on the following pages, or arrange to book a soundwalk at one of our campuses.
