Bill Douglas Cinema Museum
University of Exeter
Exeter EX4 4SB
This year for Heritage Open Day the Bill Douglas Museum, on the University of Exeter Streatham campus, are offering a free, full guided tour of the museum’s galleries and collections by the museum’s Curator, Dr Phil Wickham. This will be followed by a free, public lecture from Professor Tiago de Luca of the University of Warwick. This uses the museum’s collections and is entitled 'All the Mountains of the Earth’: Visual Culture and Global Travel in Victorian Britain’:
Tiago describes his talk as follows:
As immortalised by Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days (1872), the whole world in the second half of the nineteenth century was perceived as navigable and traversable: the site of utopian views and colonialist quests. Looking at a range of Victorian visual spectacles and attractions from The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum collections, this talk will explore how the idea of global travel was exploited in the service of a new form of tourism whereby distant places and cultures were seen as visual objects rather than as sites to be experienced.
This lecture is supported by The British Academy.
The guided tour is from 2pm (please meet at the entrance to the Old Library Building on the University of Exeter, Streatham campus).
The lecture starts at 3.15pm and will take place at the Old Library, Seminar Room A/B.
Both events are free however you can guarantee yourself a place by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org
