In this inaugural lecture Professor Pascale Aebischer from the Department of English and Film at the University of Exeter considers offstage Shakespeare in the spirit of Bottom’s promise to his fellow-actors, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, that in the woods they will be able to “rehearse most obscenely and courageously”. What connects the offstage with obscenity? What offstage labour is involved in making theatrical magic happen? And what happens when we use digital technologies to take Shakespeare outside the physical space of the theatre?
This lecture will be followed by a drinks reception from 6.30 – 7.30pm in Queen’s Café.
All are welcome to attend although advance booking is essential.
